Synthetic Chemistry & Gallery:

Teaching of practical synthetic chemistry. Our synthetic targets include not only organic compounds and inorganic coordination complexes, but also organometallic compounds (e.g. ferrocene derivatives) and other interesting compounds! Sometimes metal-organic complexes are good catalyst for promoting organic transformations. At other times, the structure of specially designed organic ligands can confer amazing catalytic selectivity in the metal catalysed synthese!

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

- Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is now a powerful and mature analytical tool nowadays. Its applications in chemistry rang from small synthetic chemicals, catalysts, polymers to large bio-macromolecules. High Field NMR spectroscopy is a versatile technique because it is noninvasive. While the principal use of NMR spectroscopy is to obtain qualitative and quantitative information about chemical structures of the materials being studied, the technique can also be applied in the characterization of molecular motions to provide dynamical information.

- Go there for Online Intro for NMR Spectroscopy.

- There is an online textbook on Basics of NMR Spectroscopy AVAILABLE FREE-OF-CHARGE! Undergraduates should have found it to be very useful for further study.

Gas Chromatography

- There is also some information which is very useful. Online Intro for Gas chromatography.

Nowadays, we'll also use modeling software to explain the chemical reactivity pattern ...

In synthetic chemistry lab, it's always full of fun!

In chemistry lab, we can meet students from various professions, e.g. biochemistry, chemistry ...

Moreover, we can meet some foreign friends (not aliens) here! Moechte Sie ein Schweinshaxe? Eistee? Oder Oolong-tee?

Sometimes, we can learn foreign culture and new language in a chemistry lab!

Who are they? Some of you may be there in the picture! These are part of my students. I believe they have learnt a lot in 2001.

Daniel is involved in Qinghaosu research. Hey, Tommy!
Some other good students! How good are they? Ask them. These are my collegues!
This is Dr Lo, an expert on crystallography. Cedric has been working in Pharmacy Dept in Chinese University after graduation!
XXL-sized rotary evaporator, sitting next to me. A picture taken outside the laboratory building. (April 2002) Why are we doing experiments outside the laboratory?
One of the excellent graduate students. Background is a typical laboratory area. Another one of the excellent graduate students in front of a messy workplace.
